The 1-Series scored 15.45 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment held its shape well. There was a slight risk of serious chest injury for the driver and a slight risk of serious leg injury for the passenger.

The vehicle scored 15.88 out of 16 in the side impact crash test. There was a slight risk of serious chest and abdomen injury for the driver. A further two points were earned in the pole test.

Dual front airbags, side airbags and head-protecting side curtains are standard equipment. Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) are also standard. Intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats.

Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash.

The passenger compartment held its shape well in the offset crash test. The brake pedal moved rearwards by 31mm. The clutch pedal moved upwards 2mm. The steering wheel hub moved 57mm forward, 21mm downward and 8mm sideways. The front ("A") pillar moved 13mm rearwards. All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash the driver's door could be opened with high manual effort.

The airbag cushioned the head of the driver and contact was stable. The passenger's head was cushioned by the airbag. There were no knee hazards.

In all areas likely to be struck by a child's head, the bonnet offered good protection and the car scored maximum points for this part of the assessment. For an adult's head, protection was predominantly poor, although some areas tested were good.

The bumper offered good protection to pedestrians' legs in all areas, and scored maximum points. However, the front edge of the bonnet was poor and scored no points.

The Tata Xenon, a recent entrant to the market, has received a poor 2 star ANCAP safety rating due to the lack of electronic stability control.

Other models in the latest round of testing include the Toyota Kluger, Peugeot 2008, Citroen C4 Grand Picasso and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. All of these models achieved the maximum 5 star ANCAP safety rating.
